Amethyst-Ring Unique Engagement Rings
Knox Jewelers’ Custom Monarch Design

The mineral quartz includes a diverse family of gemstones including the violet hued variety, amethyst. This gemstone’s coloring can range from the desirable saturated darker purples and reddish purples to lighter grayish lavender tints. Naturally occurring irradiation and a trace amount of iron present in amethyst’s crystal structure causes its violet color.

Throughout history this gemstone has been a favorite amongst royalty, decorating kings and queens in the color of nobility. At one time amethyst was as expensive as ruby or emerald until the late 19th century when vast deposits of the gemstone were discovered in Brazil. The country is still producing beautiful amethyst and is one of the most important sources of the gemstone. Today, amethyst is most commonly known as the birthstone tied to the month of February.

Color zoning is very common in rough amethyst crystals. This means amethyst grows with distinct bands of darker and lighter shades of purple within the same crystal. The darkest, most saturated purple is usually present at the tips of the formation while the rest of the crystals fades to light violet and colorless. There will be very few vibrant purple faceted gemstone compared to lighter options once the crystal is cut and polished.

Amethyst rates a gemstone hardness of 7 on the Mohs Scale. It is not as durable as sapphire or diamonds, so if you choose to set an amethyst into one of our custom ring settings, it would need to be worn with care and might not be suitable for everyday jewelry. However, this mysterious deep violet amethyst shown here would make a stunning one-of-a-kind right hand ring. This amethyst option is currently featured on our online gemstone list, and is just waiting to be made into a custom created masterpiece!

Take a cue from kings and queens throughout history and let us at Knox Jewelers help you design a custom created piece of jewelry holding this marvelous deep violet amethyst. Visit our online gemstone list and view all of our available amethyst options!

Where is Topaz Found?

Topaz-Map Unique Engagement Rings

United States – The United States is a minor source of topaz.

Mexico – Many topaz shades are sourced from Mexico including rich orange-brown varieties.

Brazil – At the Capão mine near Minas Gerais, Imperial Topaz, one of the most rare varieties of the gemstone, is mined from an open pit. Imperial topaz can range in hues from a warm orange to a deep rose color.

Nigeria – Colorless topaz is mined here and treated to produce in-demand blue topaz.

Namibia – Another source of colorless topaz is found in Namibia.

Madagascar – Though a minor source, colorless topaz can be found from sources in Madagascar.

Pakistan – Pakistan is one of the leading sources of topaz.

Sri Lanka – After Brazil, Sri Lanka is one of the largest deposits of colorless topaz.

Myanmar – Colorless topaz, that is easily treatable can be found in Myanmar.

If you are the fortunate enough to have a special event, such as a birthday or anniversary, coupled to the month of November, let us at Knox Jewelers help you create a custom one-of-a-kind piece featuring a chromatic topaz. The golden variety of the mineral topaz is the gemstone tied to the month. Although golden or brown is the most requested hue of the gem, topaz actually has an exceptionally wide color range including shades and saturations of blue, green, yellow, orange, red, pink, and even purple. Colorless topaz is very plentiful, and is often treated to give it a blue color. Blue topaz is featured heavily in jewelry, but its color is usually altered from a colorless state. Topaz varieties are often named simply by their hue, such as pink or blue topaz, but there are also a few trade names you may run into. Imperial topaz is one of the gem’s most expensive colors, and displays a medium reddish orange to orange-red. The name for imperial topaz originated in the nineteenth-century in Russia. Then, this pink-orange topaz was being mined in the Ural Mountains, and was named in honor the Russian czar. Ownership of the gem was even restricted to the royal family for time.

Any one of our custom designs can be altered to hold this warm hued birthstone fit for a queen. The possibility are endless with a gemstone naturally mined in so many hues and varieties. A Knox Jewelers custom created piece, featuring an alluring topaz is the perfect way to celebrate any occasion falling within the month. Contact us today and let’s get started. We can always search our cutters’ inventory for your perfect gemstone, or we have a selection of luminescent topaz in a variety of sizes and cuts already available!

Nature Inspired Engagement Rings

Near the close of last year, Knox Jewelers predicted what might be the up-and-coming trends for custom engagement rings in 2016. One conjecture, on the upcoming popularity of nature inspired engagement rings, has now become a fact. Both engagement rings and wedding band with motifs drawn from nature are currently in demand. All year the requests have been pouring in for custom created rings displaying flowers, petals, leaves, vines and even mountain scenes. If you or your partner-to-be has a passion for the outdoors, then creating a ring with natural elements might be the perfect way to symbolize that affection. A band with wrapping vines may remind you of time you spent outdoors together, or a ring with sculptural plumeria may symbolize her favorite flower. If you are at your most happy outside, close to the elements, let us incorporate that feeling into the most important piece of jewelry you wear everyday.

Your passion for the outdoors aside, certain flowers were used in antique jewelry to convey secret messages. For example, roses were a symbol of friendship. If you would like to mimic elements from your favorite antique floral jewelry, we can help you turn  your inspiration into a one-of-a-kind engagement ring.

Shown below are some of our favorite nature inspired engagement ring that were commissioned this year. Any of these settings can be recreated around your specifications. Taking into account the vast number of nature inspired ring created this year, we are sure the trend will continue to remain strong into 2017.
