Most folks zoom by Fresno on their way to Yosemite of Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park. But when you stop just off State 99, you will uncover a Central Valley Surprise of a stylish, eclectic and diverse city that has not forgotten the value of small-town charm. Just like a piece of master-crafted diamond jewelry from Knox Jewelers, unique accents stand out and sparkle in the neighborhood. Begin your proposal journey through California’s Central Valley by catching the neon-bright buzz of the Tower District vibe. Within this hip neighborhood of vintage shops, cafes, clubs, brew pubs and theaters you will find it bustles with the locals. The namesake 1939 Tower Theater was restored to its original Art Deco glory with architecturally graduated levels and the distinctive flair of neon accenting every angle. The theater is a 1940's modern deco masterpiece.

Anchored by the Tower Theater, the Tower District has seen a booming resurgence with many new restaurants and clubs opening within a four mile radius. The Tower theater is located at the central intersection of Wishon and Olive avenues, relatively close to the Fresno-Yosemite International Air Terminal, Freeway 41 and Hwy 99. Being the crown jewel of Fresno's hottest nightlife neighborhood, the Tower Theatre lends its name to an area which has a community focus of arts and entertainment for all generations. Opening in 1939 as a 20th Century Fox Movie House the theater, restored and reopened in 1990 as a center for the performing arts. In 1992, the theatre was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Considered to be the finest facility of its kind in California, the Tower Theatre boasts an authentic art deco theme throughout the interior and exterior of the building like an Italian Terrazo tile covered foyer and adjoining lobby with beautiful historic Carvarts glass etching which served as a mingling area for patrons between acts for refreshments or concession sales.

As the Tower Theater makes a brilliant backdrop to a vintage era proposal, the Tower Classic Car Show would be the finishing “props” to add to the setting. Everything from hot rods to vintage makes and models can be found at The Tower Classic Car Show. The largest classic car show in the Central Valley takes place along Olive Avenue between Palm and Van Ness in the Tower District. Over 400 cars are on display including Street Rods, Fat Fenders, T-Buckets, Roadsters, Muscle Cars, Pickups, Modifieds and Nostalgia Rods dating from 1931 to 1972. The event also features live music and a fun atmosphere to propose to your partner with a Knox Jewelers engagement ring. The Tower Classic Car Show is a fabulous family event and a great way to spend an afternoon. Stroll up and down Olive Avenue admiring all of the classic beauties, listen to some live music, window shop at the unique Tower stores and stop in for a bite to eat at your favorite Tower District restaurant or cafe. Hot Rods Fresno was formed back in 1999 by a group of 8 guys who went to high school together and hung out back in the 50s. Deciding it would be fun to get together and show off their passion for hotrods and admire the handcraft it takes to bring them back to life, the first car show was held at Mikes Bar in Friant.

The word was passed around and 50 hotrods showed up. In 2013, the annual show had 500 cars. After running out of room for the event, the need to look for a larger site that would hold the cars in the future brought the event to the Tower Theatre and its founders donate all proceeds to the Nancy Hinds Hospice. So spend a day meandering in a by gone era, reminisce about things past and dream about the future to come when you have the best in diamond jewelry, a unique heirloom engagement ring from Know Jewelers.

Life is like playing Apples to Apples, you never know what is coming next. Neither will your partner when your proposal is carried into an original documentary or film-short. With you as the filmmaker, produce a theatrical event of epic proportions, worthy of hitting the big screen and popping the Big Question. And the best platform to showcase your production is the Vina de Oro Film Festival held in the Tower Theater on Olive Avenue. The Viña de Oro Committee have joined forces to bring the best and most diverse cinematic opportunities for the Central Valley. Novice to experienced filmmakers can showcase full-length, short or documentary films they create. Film plays a crucial function in the way persons experience culture and to give artists a venue to promote and educate to a qualified and interested audience. Proudly stated, Fresno is one of the most diverse regions in Central California, if not in the entire State. By being so it has allowed the community to grow and flourish into the thriving cultural hub of today. There are so many reasons why Fresno is virtuosic and the Viña de Oro Film Festival is just one of them. See your history begin on the big screen during your feature and the idyllic happy ending would be presenting a Knox Jewelers engagement ring. The sequel? Creating a custom crafted wedding band.

If a film of “Epic” proportions is not your style, try a proposal of “Organic” proportions. Explore Leafy Woodland Park and relax in the peaceful retreat of the Shinzen Japanese Garden and walk along one of the multiple paths in this 300-acre green oasis. In 1967 when the Park was being developed, the idea was proposed to create a Japanese garden complete with stone lanterns and a teahouse to be dedicated to Fresno's Sister City Kochi, Japan as a symbol of friendship and international brotherhood. A group led by Ben Nakamura, a Fresno accountant, was formed to enlist the aid of the Japanese-American community. In 1972, Paul Saito, a Landscape Architect from Orange County, was chosen to design the Garden. He was assisted by Shiro Nakagawa from Japan, a master teahouse designer. The Garden was planned around the four seasons, having distinctive plantings per season. The ground-breaking ceremony was held in 1975 and construction began. Stream beds with waterfalls, seven bridges and Koi Pond were constructed. The plantings of many trees, shrubs and lawn areas begun. Paved pathways lead you through the spring section where Azaleas, Camellias, Crabapples, Irises, flowering cherries and plums are a delight. The rippling waters of the Koi Pond are the centerpiece of the summer section. Tulip trees, Chinese Pistache and Tallow trees display their bright fall colors in the autumn section and a large waterfall, pines and evergreens dominate the winter section. By Spring 1981, the Garden was developed enough to be open for public viewing. In September 1989, a thatched-roof teahouse, only one of the two authentic teahouses in the Continental United States, was added. It was built in Japan and re-assembled by three Japanese master carpenters and master thatcher. Visiting this peaceful garden to share your engagement ring and proposal would be a breathtaking experience and also offers an excellent location to re-visit to celebrate your anniversary with a custom designed diamond jewelry selection from Knox Jewelers.
