It was founded in 1904 and was called a “glittering jewel box,” after its 1986 refurbishing; this was the first city-owned theater in America. Today, the Sheldon offers year-round events ranging from theatre, music, dance, films, comedy, lectures and more. The theater features local and national performers, and also is home to The Sheldon Theatre Brass Band, The Phoenix Theatre and The Red Wing Singers. Take your honey out for a wonderful show and present them with their own glittering diamond jewelery in a box! When you propose the engagement ring that you've chosen should be high quality so that it's obvious it will last hundreds of years. Knox Jewelers focuses on creating heirloom quality pieces of art so that this landmark of your love will last down the generations of your family the way that the Sheldon Theatre has lasted as a landmark of its community. Wedding bands can also be custom created to match the engagement ring that you've chosen to make sure that it is a matched set that fits your dearest's personality perfectly.
Proposing somewhere public, like the Sheldon Theatre, may not suit you and your soon to be fiance. If that is the case, then after taking in a show head to the St. James Hotel, the Golden Lantern Inn, or the Pratt-Taber Inn.
The St. James Hotel opened on Thanksgiving Day, 1875, after a group of 11 civic-minded businessmen recognized the need for a first-class lodging establishment in the port city of Red Wing, Minnesota. The building is a four-story Italianate structure in grand style with handsome furnishings, Brussels carpets in the lobby and English velvet carpet in the second floor ladies’ parlor. The St. James was an immediate sensation and became the hub of activity in Red Wing overnight. The hotel’s first floor included three dining rooms, the kitchen, office and baggage storage while the lower level featured a parlor, billiard hall, barbershop, public baths and four water closets. The second floor featured a ladies parlor, bridal suite and two ladies’ water closets. An elegant ballroom occupied the fourth floor. Now owned by the Red Wing Shoe Company, the St. James continues to offer guests the same medley of Old World service, cutting-edge amenities and culinary delights that it did on opening day more than 130 years ago.
No expense was spared in the construction of this elaborate home and guests enjoy all of today’s modern amenities and conveniences while surrounded by period architecture, original woodwork and fixtures. The best of both worlds!
The Pratt-Taber Inn is a restored 1876 Bed & Breakfast offering a magical twist to today’s standard fare. The rooms are decorated with the Innkeeper’s special touch... Beautiful fabrics, romantic old-fashioned creativity with a casual attitude and an invitation to send you back to a more gentler time. Fireplaces, comfortable beds, fine linens, private baths, line-dried sheets, fresh flowers, home-baked goodies, full sumptuous breakfasts and candlelit evenings await you. And in balmy weather enjoy a lemonade, a good book or a memorable conversation on one of our three comfy porches.
As you can see, any of these three historical hotels would offer a stunning, private setting for your proposal. Especially after enjoying a day around town and an evening at the theater, what better way to end the night then by getting down on one knee, taking your loved one's hand in yours and asking them to spend the rest of your lives together having incredible adventures like this one. Knox Jewelers is proud to offer a wide range of styles, including completely custom designs, so that your engagement ring will look exactly the way you want it to. It won't be long at all before you find yourselves exchanging vows and wedding bands in front of your nearest and dearest, while wearing some fabulous diamond jewelery of course. Some of the hotels even offer wedding packages! That would let you exchange your vows in the same building you proposed in; and you could even make this a special spot to return to on your anniversaries.
